2022-2023 EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Rio Grande Valley Branch of the Texas Chapter of the American Public Works Association (TPWA-RGV) established the TPWA-RGV Scholarship Fund in 2012. The TPWA-RGV Scholarship (Scholarship) was created to provide financial assistance for the higher education of anyone seeking a certificate or degree in the fields of public works (see attached list for educational tracks/occupations that may be considered under the umbrella of Public Works).
It is the goal of the Branch to award up three (2) $500 Scholarships this year.
ELIGIBILITY
Requirements to apply for the TPWA-RGV Scholarship:
- Applicant must be a resident of the State of Texas 12 or more months prior to the date of application and live in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr or Willacy County.
- Applicant must not be related to any member on the Scholarship Committee.
- Applicant cannot be the recipient of this scholarship in any previous year.
and
- Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 12 hours) in an undergraduate or (at least 9 hours) higher degree program.
or
- Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 12 hours) in a technical school working toward a certificate or diploma with an anticipated minimum duration of one year.
or
- Applicant must be employed in a full-time position and enrolled as a part-time student (3+ hours) in an undergraduate or higher degree program or a technical school with an anticipated minimum duration of one year for which a certificate or diploma is awarded.
or
- A graduating high school senior who will be a full-time student in an undergraduate degree program or a technical school with an anticipated minimum duration of one year for which a certificate or diploma is awarded.
SELECTION
Applicants must:
(1) Complete the application.
(2) Submit a letter of no more than two pages, single sided that address the following topics; why the funding is desired and deserved, course of study, career field you are working toward, and why you chose the major and career field and;
(3.a) Submit a transcript from the most recent school attended or
(3.b) Submit a letter of recommendation from your current or most current employer.
ADMINISTRATION
Applications must be submitted and received via email or mail on or before April 21, 2023. The Scholarship Committee will formally present the scholarship awards for approval at the May 2023 branch meeting of the Rio Grande Valley Branch, Texas Chapter of the American Public Works Association.
Scholarship funds will be paid to the scholarship recipient upon proof of registration or enrollment to an applicable school of higher education, and certification by the recipient that the eligibility requirements above are met. GENERAL INFORMATION
(Members Only)
All funds shall be used toward payment of conference registration, hotel & food, coach airfare and/or transportation costs directly related to the identified course and any unused amount will be returned to TPWA-RGV Branch. If the cash awarded is not used for the intended purposes, it will be returned to TPWA-RGV Branch. No funds provided by TPWA-RGV Branch shall be used for personal purposes. Copies of all receipts shall be provided to the TPWA-RGV Branch within 15 days of completion of the course.
Texas Chapter of American Public Works Association (TPWA) – Rio Grande Valley Branch Professional Development Scholarship that the monies received will be used in assistance of attending any one of the following:
1) APWA National Conference
2) TPWA Annual Conference & Equipment Show
3) TPWA Annual Short Course Conference
4) Other APWA related course (subject to approval by the TPWA-RGV Board)
